Security cover for cargo to US

The US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will turn its attention to strict security for international inbound cargo as it moves to implement 100 per cent piece level screening of cargo transported on passenger aircraft, says the Shipping Gazette quoting The International Air Cargo Association. Mr Edward Kelly, TSA General Manager-Cargo, told the International Air Cargo Forum & Exposition in Kuala Lumpur recently that TSA’s first mile stone of 50 per cent piece level screening for cargo transported in passenger aircraft would come into force in February, and would rise gradually to 100 per cent in August 2010, as part of the Department of Homeland Security’s mandate to provide a level of security for cargo in line with that for passenger baggage. The representative of DHL Express present at the meeting emphasised the need for co-ordinated and balanced approach suggesting that the authorities should not be reliant too much on physical measures; more important would be the “intelligence” available from industry and Government agencies.
