Financial emergency

This has reference to the report “Jet Airways to cut salaries by 5-25 per cent, which says the move, to be implemented according to salary grades, covers employees drawing over Rs 75,000 per month (Business Line, November 24).

Actually, there is a provision in the Indian Constitution (Article 360), giving freedom to the Government to impose a ‘financial emergency’ in the country (cutting salaries of government staff when the situation warrants), but no government has so far ever tried to effect it, despite the fact that there are some white elephants in the sector proving a burden on the country’s exchequer.

It is tim e governments took a cue from Jet Airways.
