Downtrodden, forgotten!

The article “Problem is absence of will, not lack of resources” (Business Line, November 24) speaks the whole truth and does so directly. SEZs in India have earned the notoriety of lacking even the basic infrastructural amenities and facilities for those who work there.

Water supply, healthcare, education, housing and the like are all either totally absent or as bad as non-existent. The SEZs’ only focus seems to be to woo the investors and take care of their requirements, as is clear from all the sops offered to them.

The very fact that industry thrives anywhere because of the labour force has often been forgotten by successive government as well as industrialists.

Numerous tax incentives are offered as ‘carrots’ to investors. But even the basic housing and transportation needs of the labourers are not being addressed, with workers often having to tread by foot or cycle on bad roads, miles away from the work-place. Their plight is appalling, while the rich investor is made richer by the day.
