Cardamom crashes on heavy arrivals

Labour shortage at grading centres adds to woes.

Kochi, Nov. 24 The cardamom prices crashed last week at the Kerala and Tamil Nadu auctions on heavy arrivals and shortage of labour at grading centres in Bodinayakannur.

The average price fell by Rs 100 a kg in a week to Rs 400 a kg at Sunday’s auction held by the Kumily-based KCPMC. The average price at the previous weekend was Rs 500 a kg and from thereon the prices witnessed a gradual decline in all the auctions. At the Sunday auction, 54 tonnes of the commodity arrived, of which 53.5 tonnes were sold. The maximum price was Rs 560 a kg and minimum Rs 250 a kg.

The current rate of arrivals is 300 to 350 tonnes a week and the buyers do not seem to have the capacity to absorb the entire arrivals valued at Rs 17.5 crore every week, Mr P.C. Punnoose, General Manager, CPMC, told Business Line. Supply has outweighed the demand and hence “it has become a buyer’s market now,” he said.

Labour shortage

Aggravating the situation was a severe shortage of labour in the Bodinayakannur primary cardamom processing centre for cleaning and sieving /grading of the capsules, which in turn has been delaying the dispatch of consignments to North Indian markets. Consequently, there is a liquidity crunch as the upcountry dealers make the payments only on receipt of the waybill.

Almost all the workers engaged in this sector are women. Increased agricultural activity, following good northeast monsoon in this part of Tamil Nadu, is said to have enthused them to take up jobs in the farms at higher wages.
