Maytas Infra power arm upbeat on turnkey solutions

Order book sees big increase.

V. Rishi Kumar

Hyderabad, Nov. 24 The power division of Maytas Infra Ltd is expanding its presence in the turnkey solutions business both at the transmission and distribution network for utilities and in offering solutions for power plants.

The company’s power division now commands an order book of Rs 3,000 crore, up from Rs 1,100 crore in 2007-2008. It includes about 65 per cent from the domestic market and the rest from its overseas business, mainly West Asia, Africa and the Far East.

The head of Power Division, Maytas Infra, Mr N. Kannan, said Maytas’ recent wins include Ind Bharat at Karva, orders from Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka utilities. The company’s power division orders cover 33 kV to 400 kV turnkey substations and transmission lines and more specifically, opportunities in rural electrification. Major central schemes are driving the growth of this sector with huge financial commitments, he explained.

Challenges

Mr Kannan said the sector is not without its dose of challenges — raising raw material costs, increasing input cost for construction, non availability of equipment, and scarcity of skilled manpower for construction.

Most of the power plants are now taking up automation in a big way to make their projects efficient and to also help them better monitor them. Maytas sees itself playing a significant role in automation by leveraging the strengths of Satyam Computer, whose promoters are also investors here.

The power division of Maytas Infra is not only an EPC contractor for power projects but also for project developers, both thermal and hydel power generation, offering build, operate and transfer option. The company is also evaluating support to new nuclear plants though it is too early to comment, he said.
