Trial runs at Gangavaram port almost over

K.V. Kurmanath

Hyderabad, Nov. 25 Gangavaram port, being developed by a consortium led by the Chairman of the port, Mr D.V.S. Raju, is in the process of testing various systems at the port. “We have to test them piece by piece to measure their efficacy. After that, we will go for a trial for the whole of the port. This will be completed in a week or two,” Mr Raju told Business Line. The port would be formally inaugurated after that.

The port has been handling vessels since three months as it tested various components. The port, which would have 29 berths with a total capacity of 200 million tonnes a year when fully functional, would be ready with five berths and can handle 35 mt initially.

While one berth each would be dedicated for iron ore and coal, three berths would be used to handle multi-purpose cargo handling.“We can handle 35 million tonnes with the five berths,” he said. Mr Raju said the port would be the first in the country to handle “super cape size” ships.
