Mangalore Corpn plans five markets

Mangalore, Nov. 25 The Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) is planning to build modern markets in five places in the city, according to Mr Sameer Shukla, MCC Commissioner.

Addressing the members of the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) on the topic “city development” in Mangalore on Monday evening, he said that a proposal has been sent to the State Government for the construction of modern markets at Hampankatta, Urwa and Bejai.

Plans are also there to build markets at Surathkal and Jeppu, and proposal for building these markets will be soon sent to the Government.

Bus terminal

An integrated bus terminal will be constructed near Pumpwell Circle in Mangalore and land acquisition for this is in progress, he said.

The city, which is getting 18 MGD (million gallons a day) of water from Tumbay dam (on the outskirts of the city), will get additional 18 MGD of water soon. Additional pipelines are being laid for this purpose.

A new vented dam will be constructed at Tumbay, and the Government has sanctioned Rs 40 crore for this project. Tenders have been called for this purpose. Plans are also there to bring water from Lakya dam in Kudremukh to Mangalore city.

Stating that steps are being taken to plug leakages and pilferages in water supply system in Mangalore, Mr Shukla said MCC has formed a team to verify the authorised water connections in the city. Plans are also there to install high quality water meters, he added.

Mr Srinivas S. Kamath, KCCI President, presided over the meeting.
