Nilgiris tea output up 10% in October

P.S. Sundar

Coonoor, Nov. 25 Tea production in Nilgiris, the largest tea growing district in South India, rose 10 per cent last month over October 2007.

According to the UPASI Tea Research Foundation, production in its member estates increased to 1.54 million kg (mkg) from 1.40 mkg in October last year. The 5-year mean for the month was 1.32 mkg.

“Well distributed rainfall and more sunshine hours resulted in the Nilgiris harvesting a higher crop. Production was high in all agro-climatic zones except Kundah,” noted Dr B. Radhakrishnan, Foundation’s Senior Advisory Officer.

Cumulative production from January to October increased to 13.17 mkg from 11.53 mkg last year. All agro-climatic zones in the district received higher rainfall last month than in October 2007 and the decennial average for the month. “North-east monsoon was active and the Nilgiris received moderate to heavy rainfall throughout October,” the Foundation has recorded.
