Indian Maritime University ties up with global schools, IIMs for courses

Seven institutes to be merged with IMU.

Chennai, Nov. 25 The newly formed Indian Maritime University (IMU) has tied up with five international institutions and with the IIMs in Ahmedabad and Bangalore to offer various maritime-related courses.

IMU has tied up with Dalian Maritime University (for MBA in port management), with Shanghai Maritime University and Antwerp University (for MBA in international transportation and logistics management), with University of Malta (for degree in maritime law) and with Delft University, Netherlands, (for degree course in dredging), according to the university’s first Vice-Chancellor, Dr P. Vijayan.

It has tied up with IIM, Ahmedabad, for a one-year fast-track executive MBA in maritime management and with IIM, Bangalore, for a certificate course in management for senior seafaring officers, said Dr Vijayan, who was earlier Director, National Maritime Academy, Chennai.

The courses will begin from June, he told newspersons at National Maritime Academy in Uttandi on East Coast Road.

IMU is the first-of-its-kind central university set up by the Department of Shipping through an Act of Parliament. The Act was notified in the Government of India’s Gazette on November 14.

The university will be headquartered in Chennai and will have regional centres in Mumbai, Kolkata and Visakhapatnam.

Merger

The National Maritime Academy (in Chennai); LBS College, Marine Engineering & Research Institute (MERI) and T.S. Chanakya (at Mumbai); the MERI and Indian Institute of Port Management (Kolkata); and the National Ship Design and Research Centre (Visakhapatnam) will be merged with IMU. These institutes offer port and maritime-related short-term courses and degrees in nautical science and marine engineering, which will be offered here, he said.

Dr Vijayan said IMU will begin with eight departments, including port management, nautical science, maritime law and inland water transport. Under these departments, degree, postgraduate degrees and research programmes will be offered by the university.

The university’s headquarters at Chennai will be constructed at a cost of Rs 245 crore in an area of 106 acres out of its 300 acres at Chemenchery, located between East Coast Road and Old Mahabalipuram Road.

In the remaining land, a National Maritime Complex is being planned for around Rs 1,500 crore. The complex will have a maritime art gallery, maritime museum, marine aquarium and a convention centre and a five-star hotel.

The Centre will provide funds for IMU, the development of the maritime complex will be done through a public-private-partnership mode, said a Department of Shipping press release.
