Indian tourism not hit by meltdown: Ambika Soni
Our Bureau
New Delhi, Nov. 25 The slowdown in the global economy has not affected the tourism sector, the Minister for Tourism, Ms Ambika Soni, said here on Tuesday.
“Indian tourism does not look depressed and dejected. We have a variety of tourism projects to attract tourists and sustain our growth. Unlike the rest of the world which saw a growth of about 6 per cent, India has been witnessing a growth of about 12-14 per cent. It could drop a bit but will be well above the global average growth rate,” Ms Soni said while addressing the Economic Editors’ conference.
The Minister outlined the various initiatives which the Government has taken including focussing on a various markets like those in West Asia and East Asia rather than concentrating on the US and the UK which were the main tourist markets.
Hotel projects on track
Ms Soni was also of the view that the global slowdown had not affected the hotel industry.
“No hotel project has been put on hold. Projects worth $7 billion are in the pipeline. There has to be a distinction between hotels and real estate development,” the Minister added.
