US nuclear mission coming next week

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Nov. 25 The largest trade mission of US nuclear executives is set to arrive in India on December 2 to make a pitch for the sale of American reactors for the new imported Light Water Reactor-based capacities on the anvil in the country.

The visit is being organised by the US-India Business Council (USIBC) in partnership with the Nuclear Energy Institute, and is being led by the GE-Hitachi CEO, Mr Jack Fuller. The mission would have over 50 senior executives from 30 leading US commercial nuclear firms, including representatives from Westinghouse Electric Company, another major commercial reactor manufacturer.

The delegation is slated to meet with senior Department of Atomic Energy officials and executives from state-owned utilities, including Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd and Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. Starting in New Delhi, the mission will travel to Hyderabad and then Mumbai.

“We are coming to India to learn how US commercial nuclear suppliers can continue our partnership with India in the expansion of nuclear power,” the USIBC Director, Mr Ted Jones, said.

USIBC has projected a $150-billion business for civilian nuclear technologies in India’s growing nuclear power sector over the next 30 years in light of the opening up of the civil nuclear market.
