Prof. Vijayachandran delivers the BL Club lecture at VINS Christian Engineering College at Chunkankadai in Nagercoil. Our Bureau Thiruvananthapuram, Nov. 25 “There is more to an interview than simply answering questions. Candidates should be able to market their skills and strengths during this interaction. The ability to communicate effectively is a quality that should be acquired by all those who want to become successful managers. Training and practice are imperative for achieving this,” said Prof P. Vijayachandran, Director of Hospitality Management at Marian College, Kuttikanam. He was speaking to MBA students of VINS Christian Engineering College, Chunkankadai, Nagercoil, on ‘Interview Techniques’ and ‘Introduction to Group Discussions’ at a meeting organised recently under the auspices of the Business Line Club. He advised the students to start reading newspapers and magazines regularly to gain knowledge on current affairs and to improve their vocabulary. He emphasised the importance of arriving early for an interview, entering the room gracefully with a cheerful, smiling face, and dressing conventionally. Exhibiting good manners and the use of proper body-language were also stressed. Further, students were advised to ask the interviewers relevant questions before the close of the interview and to send them a prompt thank-you note for their time. While responding, students should be brief, direct and precise, he said. There was no harm in not answering a question if they did not have an answer to it. In such a case, they could simply say, “Sorry, I am unable to answer that question,” he said. Turning to the subject of group discussions, he underlined its prominence in the daily life of a manager. While controversial situations could not be avoided in managerial activities sometimes, they had to be tackled with care. Students of management should acquire this skill from their early days in college. The need to develop inter-personal relationships and team work were also emphasised. He also took up the aims, objectives and points considered by the evaluators in a group discussion. More Stories on : Education | Human Resources | BL Club | Kerala
