Chennai, Nov. 26 The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board and Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd have signed a joint venture agreement to set up a 1,600-MW supercritical thermal power plant at Udankudi, Tuticorin. According to an official press release, the partners are in the process of setting up the joint venture which has been registered under the name Udankudi Power Corporation Ltd. The agreement was signed in the presence of the Chief Minister, Mr M. Karunanidhi. The State Government has given the go-ahead for the ground preparation to start for the Rs 8,700-crore project which is to come up on a 760-acre site belonging to the Government. The first of the two 800-MW units would start operation in March 2012 and the second in September. TNEB and BHEL signed an MoU for the project in October 2007. The environment impact assessment has been done and a public hearing would soon be held.
