Roadways Government - Politics Goods vehicle owners appeal to EC on diesel price cut Our Bureau Kolkata, Nov 26 The All-India Confederation of Goods Vehicle Owners’ Association has approached the Election Commission with the request to grant suo motu ‘no objection’ to the proposal for a reduction in diesel price by oil companies. The Union Government, in response to the demand for diesel price cut by road transport associations, has ruled out any such reduction on the ground that it will violate “the Election Commission’s code of conduct relating to ongoing Assembly elections in some states”. Election codeThe association has also urged the Union Petroleum Minister, Mr Murli Deora, to take up the diesel price reduction issue with the Election Commission so that the Commission keeps the issue outside the purview of the election code, more so because the Assembly elections being held in handful of states, the provisions of the code do not apply to large part of the country. In a statement, the association regrets the Government’s apathy towards reducing diesel price when the price of aviation turbine fuel has been systematically brought down benefiting the airlines industry. Strike threatThe road transport industry offers employment to larger number of people than the airlines industry and diesel accounts for 70 per cent of the operation cost of the truck operators. Unless the Government decides to reduce the price immediately, the road transport operators will be forced to launch an indefinite strike from December 20, the statement adds.
