Hyderabad, Nov. 26 The corporate sector should focus on enhancing employability of the under-privileged as part of their affirmative action, said Dr Jamshed J. Irani, Chairman of affirmative action council of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Director, Tata Sons Ltd.

Speaking at an interactive session with industry representatives organised by the CII, Andhra Pradesh, here on Tuesday, Dr Irani said focus on employability would give results in the short-term.

“As part of affirmative action, we, at CII, encourage initiatives in employment, entrepreneurship, employability and education. Of all these, employability will give immediate results in providing employment to underprivileged sections such as Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (SCs and STs),” he said.

Many companies are willing to provide employment to SCs and STs but “unfortunately, there is no suitable manpower for some category of jobs”.

“This should be addressed by increased focus on skill-building programmes,” he added.

Over the last two years, CII’s efforts in promoting affirmative action had yielded good results.

Many big companies such as Infosys and Tata Sons had put in place many programmes in this direction, he added.

As the elections are scheduled to take place next year, there could be some “vested interests demanding reservations to SCs and STs in private sector by law,” he said, adding that the industry should set an example by taking ample steps in skill-building.
