There is ample scope for installation of solar lights in rural areas in northern Karnataka region, according to Mr D.B. Gore, Chief General Manager of Nabard (National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development).
Inaugurating a seminar on ‘Solar energy and financial institutions’, organised by the Karnataka Vikas Grameena Bank (KVGB) at Dharwad, he said that shortage of power is one of the reasons for backwardness of northern Karnataka.
Quoting Mr Gore, a press release by KVGB said here on Thursday that renewable sources of energy and biogas should be used to the maximum extent. These forms were clean in nature and did not emit dangerous by-products, he said.
The Chairman of KVGB, Mr M. Dhananjaya, said that the bank, which came out with loan scheme for solar lighting purpose in 1994, has provided loans to more than 11,000 customers for this purpose. The bank is striving hard to make solar energy a mass movement, he said.
Delivering the keynote address, the former Chief Secretary of Karnataka, Mr B.R. Prabhakar, said that banks should popularise the use of solar units in rural areas by devising easy loan schemes for those units. He lauded the efforts of KVGB in this regard.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr I. Pardha Saradhi, General Manager of Syndicate Bank, called upon the people to inculcate the habit of saving fuel on the lines of monetary savings.
The release said that Kundapur and Sullia branches of KVGB ranked first and second, respectively, in disbursing loans for solar lights during 2006-07. These branches were honoured on the occasion, it added.
