CII-XLRI initiative to assess, develop HR competencies

Chennai, Nov. 28 The Confederation of Indian Industry along with National HRD Network and XLRI Jamshedpur launched HRCompass, an initiative to assess and develop Human Resource (HR) competencies of HR professionals in India.
At a press conference, the Chairman of National Committee (Skills, Human Resources & Industrial Relations) of CII and Managing Director of Saint Gobain India, Mr B. Santhanam, said the country is adding about three million new jobs every year in manufacturing and service sectors.
This would require at least 35,000 HR professionals each year, against which the country produces less than 10,000. With the emerging needs from the service sector, especially retail that requires specialised workforce, it is necessary to train HR professionals.
The ratio of HR professionals to workforce works out to 1 for every 600. An acceptable ratio would be one for every one hundred, Mr Santhanam said.
While few large organisations have focussed on improving their HR capabilities, many small and medium enterprises have not made any effort in this direction.
Many HR professionals have traditionally grown within the organisation from personnel or administration roles, without formal qualification.
