Lankan teas fetch highest price

Coonoor, Nov. 28 Sri Lankan teas sold at Colombo auctions fetched the highest price among all the teas sold through different auction centres across the globe in the first ten months of 2008.

An analysis of the information available with the Tea Board and the market reports of the various auction centres reveal that prices increased in all the auction centres compared to last year.

Colombo auctions posted an average price of $3.03 a kg, followed by Kenya’s Mombassa auctions at $2.30.

Indian average

Indian auctions recorded $1.99 of which, North Indian auctions scored $2.21 and South Indian auctions, $1.53.

Bangladesh’s Chittagang auctions recorded $1.61. Indonesia’s Jakarta auctions posted $1.52, while Malawi’s Limbe, the lowest at $1.36.

Compared to the first ten months of 2007, Mombassa posted the highest increase of 40.24 per cent, closely followed by Chittagang at 40 per cent.

Limbe recorded an increase of 33.33 per cent, while Colombo, 27.31 per cent.
