Maharashtra ATS to probe Karkare’s death

Our Bureau

Mumbai, Nov. 28 The Maharashtra Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) will investigate the deaths of Maharashtra ATS chief, Mr Hemant Karkare, and two other senior police officers. It will also investigate why the terror attack took place right before the elections.

The Union Minister of State for Home, Mr Sriprakash Jaiswal, addressing the media said investigations will look at the reasons as to why the three officers were targeted. All the terrorists are foreign nationals and some of them could be Pakistanis also. The terrorist could have received some support from local contacts, he said.

“The country is at war with terror and now it will take steps to contain terrorism on a war footing,” Mr Jaiswal.

He said that 149 people have been killed in the attack which includes 26 dead in the Trident attack. The figure could further increase as the more bodies are being recovered by the forces. The forces have lost 14 personnel, including two NSG commandos. In the attack eight foreign nationals have also lost their lives, Mr Jaiswal said.

“We have not received any demands and we will never give into any of their demands,” Mr Jaiswal said.

The Centre will provide Rs 3 lakh additional compensation to the dead, grievously injured and those who have been incapacitated due to the injuries. It will be an exclusive compensation package over and above the package announced by the State Government.

Mr Jaiswal said the attack has taken place due to intelligence failure. In last two years, the Centre had given Rs 50 crore to the State Government having maritime borders. But somewhere some lacunas have remained in taking strict security measures, he said.

Mr Jaiswal said various State Governments are not willing to implement police reforms as they view it as an infringement of their rights. “In view of the present circumstances some of the rights reserved for the State Government in the constitution may have to be curtailed,” he said.
