Mumbai, Nov. 28
Over 30 people had died at the hands of the terrorists and the NSG has rescued 200 people held hostage, said Mr Hassan Ghafoor, Mumbai Police Commissioner, briefing journalists after the NSG action at the Oberoi Trident Hotel.
The NSG took control of the Oberoi Trident Hotel after a two-day battle which ended after two terrorists were killed.
Since Wednesday night when a group of terrorists launched attacks in various locations in the city and took control of three places – the other two being the Taj Hotel and the Nariman House, a headquarters of a Jewish sect – and held hundreds of people hostage, the Navy’s elite marine commando has been involved in a pitched battle with the terrorists in which two commandoes were killed.
Mr Ghafoor said one or two terrorists continued to resist at the Taj and Nariman House. Nine terrorists were killed and one had been caught alive. Over 200 people had been rescued from the Oberoi Trident and the security force was in the process of clearing the hotel floor-by-floor.
To a question on the security of the coastline, Mr Ghafoor said that because of the long coastline, it was ‘porous.’ But security was being strengthened through concerted efforts and continuous patrolling.
On claims of instances of firing and shoot out in other parts of the city, Mr Ghafoor said that those were rumours. “Mumbai city is safe,” he said.
Mr A.N. Roy, the Director General of Police, told a television channel that reports of firing all over the city were “absolutely false”. The police had checked and there were no fresh incidents.
