Fishing boats may have to register with police

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Nov 29 The Union Government is looking at registering fishing boats with the police rather than the current practice of such boats being registered with the ports or habours, the Special Secretary (Internal Security), Mr M.L. Kumawat, said on Saturday.

This is among the various initiatives discussed at a high-level meeting chaired by the Union Home Minister, Mr Shivraj Patil, here, Mr Kumawat said at a press conference to give an update on the Mumbai terror attack.

Upgrading coast WATCH

It was also decided that not only should there be better coordination between the Coast Guards, the Indian Navy and Police but that an institutional mechanism be put in place to further upgrade coastal security.

Talking about the death toll in Mumbai, Mr Kumawat said 183 persons including 22 foreigners had lost their lives in the terror attacks at three places in the city. “The operations at all three places are over. Weapons have been seized including 2 AK-47 rifles along with nine magazines, 2 7.62 mm pistols and mobile phones at Nariman House. In Oberoi Hotel apart from weapons three live grenades have also been seized,” Mr Kumawat said.
