Security Centre moots training State police units on NSG pattern Our Bureau New Delhi, Nov. 28 In an effort to train States to more effectively tackle urban terrorist attacks, the Centre is considering a move to train State police units on the pattern of the specialised security agency, National Security Guards. This was indicated at a press conference addressed by the Special Secretary, (Internal Security), Mr M.L. Kumawat, here on Friday. The Centre has sent another contingent of about 100 NSG commandos to Mumbai, taking the total number of NSG commandos rushed there to 477, the Special Secretary said. Meanwhile, the Director-General, Institute of Defence Studies and Analysis, Dr Thomas Mathew, has called for posting a small NSG contingent on a rotating basis in every State capital. “The local police is neither physically, mentally, psychologically or by training fit to handle this sort of situation. The local NSG can move in immediately and local police should act under them,” Dr Mathew felt. Port securityThe Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, Mr T.R. Baalu, has asked the Directorate-General of Shipping to undertake a special audit of port security in all major ports to ensure compliance of all security measures. At a meeting chaired by the Minister to review security at the ports, it was decided to take immediate steps to acquire a minimum of two speed boats to patrol the water front. Besides, the Central Industrial Security Force is being requested to deploy a Marine commando unit in every port apart from raising a bomb disposal and dog squad for each port. The meeting also decided that the Coast Guards will be authorised to rummage all suspicious merchant vessels prior to entry into a port. Similarly, customs will also inspect vessels which are anchored outside and within the port limits. More Stories on : Security | Terrorism
