Biometric cards for fishermen

Our Bureau

Mangalore, Dec. 1 Biometric smartcards will be made compulsory for sea-going fishermen in coastal Karnataka from January 1.

The move is aimed at strengthening security along the Karnataka coast and at identifying fishermen during accidents at sea.

This was announced at a joint meeting of the Coastal Security Police, the Karnataka Fisheries Department, the office of the Port Officer (Old Mangalore Port) and representatives of fishermen here on Monday.

Speaking at the meeting, Mr Mukunda Nayak, Inspector of Coastal Security Police, said at the recent high-level meeting convened by the Inspector-General of Police (Western Range) in Mangalore it was decided to expedite the issue of biometric smartcards to fishermen.

Deadline

Biometric smartcards will be made compulsory for all sea-going fishermen, and they will have to get the cards before December 31. If fishermen do not opt for biometric smartcards, they will not get diesel at subsidised rates from the Government, he said.

Mr Suresh Kumar Ullal, Deputy Director of the Fisheries Department, said nearly 3,000 fishermen at Malpe harbour in Udupi district have already got biometric smartcards. Biometric card readers will be provided to agencies patrolling sea waters and to other departments associated with fishermen.

Capt Mohan Kudari, Port Officer, Old Mangalore Port, said more than 2,600 boats and trawlers are registered in Old Mangalore Port office.
