Alliances & Joint Ventures Industry & Economy - Power States - Karnataka GMR Energy to supply 200 MW to Bangalore Our Bureau Bangalore, Dec. 1 GMR Energy Ltd (GEL) has signed a contract for supply of 200 MW power on a “round-the-clock” basis to Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Ltd (Bescom) from November 16 to January 31. Earlier, the company supplied 200 MW to Rajasthan State Electricity Board round the clock from November 4 to November 15 on a merchant basis. The 220-MW barge-mounted power plant situated at Tanir Bavi, Mangalore, was non-operational after the expiry of its seven-year power purchasing agreement with the Karnataka Government in June this year. Subsequent to the contract with Karnataka, GMR has made bids offering to continue to supply to Bescom, for fresh contracts with Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd and other States from February. A company spokesman declined to give the price of the power supplied to Bescom. Severe shortageKarnataka has been facing frequent power cuts due to severe shortage since two months. Currently, the State had a shortage of 1,700 MW while its installed capacity was 8,500 MW. Generation from the 500-MW Bellary Thermal Power Station, which was producing 350 MW, would be enhanced to its installed capacity by the end of this month.
