Our Bureau

Mumbai, Dec. 1 Maharashtra will have a State Security Council on the lines of National Security Council with the Chief Minster at its helm. Other members of the council would be State Home Minister, prominent industrialist and members from social organisation.

It will advise the State Government on security matters. The decision to form the council was taken on Monday at the high powered committee meeting of Home Department, said Mr Vilasrao Deshmukh, Chief Minster of Maharashtra, while addressing the media.

Mr Deshmukh also said the committee has also decided to create and commission, one battalion of elite commandos trained on the lines on NSG in four months. It would be called Maharashtra Security Guards (MSG).

Mr Deshmukh said the State will have 24 new coastal police stations and 12 police stations. Fisherman in the State would also be given identity cards based on smart card technology. The move to give smart cards would have to be co-ordinated with other State governments. About 24 new speed boats are being bought by the State, of which three are already under construction at a shipyard in Goa, he said.

He added that the State Intelligence Centre which was formed in the wake of the bomb blast in Mumbai would soon become operational in Pune.

The State will also create a separate corporation called State Industrial Security Force, which will impart arms training to the private security guards. A unified command centre would also be created for handling emergencies, he said.
