Office in UAE to help migrant workers
Our Bureau
New Delhi, Dec. 2 The office of Director of Community Affairs Development at the Indian Overseas Centre in the United Arab Emirates will become operational in the first week of January next year, said the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs on Monday.
The office is being set up with the aim of providing a variety of services to migrant workers including help in various areas such as legal, medical and financial. It would act as a resource centre for the Gulf Cooperation Council countries.
In a statement issued by the Ministry, it has said that a similar centre will also come up in Kuala Lumpur shortly.
The decision to open the office forms part of the recommendations made by the Ministry at the third annual conference with the Heads of the Mission held here late last week. The Ministry has proposed that the Indian Workers Resource Centre should include a helpdesk and a 24X6 helpline in GCC countries and Malaysia.
“This would facilitate redressal of grievances of the migrant workers, provide information to intending migrants and act as a resource centre for state governments in time of distress,” the statement added.
