Hyderabad, Dec. 2: The National Association of Software and Services Companies (Nasscom), the apex body of Indian IT and ITES companies, has said that the Mumbai tragedy is a kind of wake-up call for the industry to pre-empt attacks in the digital sphere.

The industry, which is meeting for the first time after the 26/11 incidents in Mumbai, feels that the next threat could be in the virtual space.

“It is quite coincidental that we are holding the meeting on information security after the Mumbai tragedy We need to lay emphasis on security,” Mr Ganesh Natarajan, Chairman of Nasscom, said.

Addressing the Nasscom meet on Information Security Summit 2008 here on Tuesday, he said that the companies have begun to increase physical security to protect their employees.

The two-day meet is being organised by DSCI (Data Security Council of India), a self-regulatory body promoted by Nasscom to safeguard the data security of the industry.

With regard to information security, Mr Ganesh Natarajan said each of the 20 lakh employees of the industry needs to be aware of the issues and threats to information security.

“We need to work with law enforcing agencies. Also, we need to share best practices in the area of information security,” he pointed out.

Mr B. Ramalinga Raju, Chairman of Satyam Computer Services, called for listing out vital measures that are comparable to best standards in the world in order to ensure security. “Put them in public domain,” he said.

Mr Som Mittal, President of Nasscom, said Tackling a cyber crime is not about tackling a petty thief. We are dealing with a smart guy out there using the techniques we are using.”

The DSCI would take up awareness meetings targeting IT-BPO companies, law-enforcing agencies, judiciary and other stakeholders in the next few months.
