Security stepped up at Vizag

— K.R. Deepak

On high alert: An armed security guard patrolling at a five-star hotel in Visakhapatnam on Wednesday.

Visakhapatnam, Dec. 3 In the aftermath of the terror attacks in Mumbai, hotels and other establishments here have become more security-conscious, realising their vulnerability, and security is much more visible now.

At The Park Hotel, the only five-star hotel in the city on the beach, armed security guards are seen patrolling inside the premises and all the vehicles are being subjected to a search.

The gates are kept closed and the guests are allowed in only after the checks. At other hotels, too, security has been tightened.

The port, the Visakhapatnam steel plant and other public sector units in the city are also on the alert in the wake of the attacks.

However, there are still areas such as fishing harbour where security is almost non-existent.

According to police, they are working in co-ordination with the Navy, the coast guard and other agencies to make the coast as secure as possible.

The Coast Guard has deployed a ship off Vizag coast and aircraft to monitor the movement of vessels. Mr G.P Raj, DIG of the Coast Guard, said there was no cause for concern and the agency was on the alert all the time, more so after the Mumbai attacks.
