Our Bureau Hyderabad, Dec. 3 The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has asked the Horticulture Department to submit month-wise targets of various vegetables to be cultivated in the State. At a review meeting here on Wednesday, Dr Reddy said he wanted the details of the 54,000 hectares which was targeted to be brought under vegetables cultivation as against 34,000 hectares last year. The Chief Minister also said that the Government wanted all essential commodities and vegetables to be available to the common man at reasonable prices in spite of the global recession. A release from the Chief Minister’s Office said that he asked officials of the Horticulture, Agriculture and Marketing Departments to take all necessary steps such as increase in the cultivated area, market intervention wherever necessary and bridging the demand-supply gap. The release also said that the officials informed the Chief Minister that once the required onion stocks arrived from Maharashtra, the prices would come down further. “The price of tomato is also high in the open markets due to paucity in arrivals due to unseasonal rains and decrease in production,” he was informed. The Officials also explained to the Chief Minister that prices of other essential commodities such as edible oils including palm oil, pulses including redgram, rice, and tamarind were reasonable.
