Jute mills unions urged to withdraw stir

Our Bureau

Kolkata, Dec. 3 Indian Jute Mills Association (IJMA), the body of jute mills owners, has appealed to the unions to withdraw the strike in jute mills, which entered the third day on Wednesday, as continuation of it will benefit none, but will only cause the further erosion of market share of jute goods. Nearly 2.5 lakh jute mills workers and four million jute growers have been hit by the strike, according to a statement issued by IJMA.

Despite the strike call in 51 operating mills in West Bengal, as the statement points out, workers of five mills did not join the strike while those in five others resumed work from Tuesday.

“It is intriguing that while the trade unions have been insisting on more monetary benefits for workers, including payment of dearness allowance at enhanced rates, some union leaders have allowed workers to resume work particularly in mills not paying full wages as per the tripartite settlement,” the statement said.

It might be noted that the workers in the majority of the operating mills launched indefinite strike from December 1 in response to the strike call given by 18 trade unions active in the jute mills industry.
