Security Industry & Economy - Terrorism States - Karnataka Karnataka presents security wish-list Our Bureau Bangalore, Dec. 3 Bangalore, IT hub and a hypersensitive security area, urgently needs an NSG (National Security Guards) unit among other reinforcements to counter the terror threat facing it, the Karnataka Chief Minister, Mr B.S.Yediyurappa, has told the Prime Minister. At the inauguration of the centenary celebrations of the Indian Institute of Science on Wednesday, the Chief Minister said he had presented Dr Manmohan Singh with a security wish-list in the wake of last week’s terrorist attacks in Mumbai. It includes an NSG unit – which the Centre has promised; a base for the Indo-Tibetan Border Police at Belgaum some 500 km north of Bangalore; three reserve battalions; check-posts and outposts along the State’s Western coast. Dr Singh, on his arrival at the Yelahanka Air Force Station in the morning, spoke to the City Police Commissioner, Mr Shankar Bidari, and said the police had to be alert. “Your responsibilities are high. I am confident that you will discharge your responsibilities,” he said. Bangalore has been on the terror radar in recent years. In July this year, eight low-intensity serial blasts took off in different parts of the city, killing a woman. In December 2005, Prof M.C.Puri of IIT-Delhi was killed in the first terror attack, at the IISc. Dr Singh paid a tribute to Prof. Puri and said, “They chose the IISc as their target because this great institution and this vibrant city have represent the spirit of a resurgent India. No coward, no terrorist, no enemy of our secular and democratic republic will ever succeed in destroying the unity of our country.” More Stories on : Security | Terrorism | Karnataka
