Shipping/Ports States - West Bengal Heavy lift cargo
River-cum-road route: The Kolkata-based logistics service provider, ABC India Ltd, achieved yet another milestone in transportation of heavy lift cargo by moving two DHDT reactors from Kolkata to Bongaigaon refinery in Assam by using the river-cum-road route. The reactors, fabricated by L&T at its Hazira plant (Gujarat) and weighing 517 tonnes and 443 tonnes, are to be used by Bongaigaon Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd in Assam to meet the Euro III and IV norms. The reactors were first transported by ship from Hazira to the Diamond Harbour anchorage under the Kolkata port. At the Diamond Harbour, they were offloaded from the ship and re-loaded into barges for transportation by the river route - first Hooghly river and then Brahmaputra river via Bangladesh. At Jogighopa in Assam, the equipment were unloaded from barges into a temporary jetty, specially constructed by the company for transfer into modular hydraulic trailers, for the final 43 km journey by road. Four diversions and bypasses have been made on this stretch to facilitate smooth and safe delivery of the consignments. A few years ago, ABC India had transported similar heavy lift cargo by road from the Kandla port to Panipat, covering a distance of 1,400 km. Last year, it moved railway coaches by road to Kashmir valley to facilitate the launch of railway services in the valley.
