Aquaculture States - Tamil Nadu Shrimp farmers seek compensation Our Bureau Chennai, Dec. 4 The recent cyclone has destroyed over 1,000 ha shrimp farms and farm infrastructure and machinery estimated at about Rs 150 crore, according to a press release from the Prawn Farmers Federation of India. The Tamil Nadu Fisheries Department has initiated a survey and the Tamil Nadu Coastal Aqua Farmers Federation is working with the district level associations for a detailed study of the damage. The shrimp farmers are seeking the Government’s support to compensate the loss. Over 10,000 farmers have been affected in the stormy weather which hit the southern coast of Tamil Nadu last week. More than 100 cm of rain was recorded on the day in Nagapattinam district and the cyclonic winds and rough seas destroyed the farm bunds resulting in the loss of over 1,500 tonnes of shrimp stock. Farm machinery including aerators, pumps, cables, distribution panel boards and water intake systems were completely destroyed, the release said. The damage has aggravated the losses suffered by the farmers who have been hit by the sharp drop in prices because of the international market slow down. More Stories on : Aquaculture | Tamil Nadu
