Manu P. Toms Mumbai, Dec. 4 The Logan is having a rough ride in India but South Africa has taken to it in a big way. Exports from India have crossed the 1,000-unit mark since the time they began in September. “We have a fairly good order from South Africa and will export 600 units this month. We hope to finish this fiscal with exports of at least 2,000 units of the Logan,” Mr Nalin Mehta, CEO, Mahindra-Renault, told Business Line. He added that the company was also looking at other right hand drive markets and would zero in on at least three more countries in the next few months. At present, completely built units (CBUs) of the 1.6-litre petrol version are shipped to South Africa and then sold through Renault’s distribution network. Logan is not manufactured in that country and all the requirements are met from the Indian plant in Nashik. South Africa is quickly emerging as the favoured destination for Indian automakers considering that Tata Motors is also bullish on this market.
Logan sales plummeted to 300 units in November after recording 1,752 and 1,067 units apiece in September and October. “It is mainly because of correction at the dealer level which will continue this month too. We hope that things get better in the domestic market by January,” said Mr Mehta. Despite this setback, the performance on the export front should be cause for cheer. By the end of the day, companies are keen on tapping every avenue that generates revenue. And in a global slowdown, this is an added bonus.
