Madurai, Dec. 7 The Union Government has given an in-principle nod for establishing a super-speciality hospital at Madurai at a cost of Rs 150 crore, according to Mr V.K. Subburaj, State Principal Secretary, Healthcare.

Delivering the special address at the session on ‘Healthcare@SPEED 2008’ as part of SPEED 2008 Conference, organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry, Madurai Zone here last week, he said the Rajaji Hospital at Madurai attracted about 28 lakh outpatients every year from the southern districts and the need for a super-speciality hospital was felt for long.

An exclusive Government hospital for treating the mentally ill will be coming up at Theni and a medical college at Sivagangai, he added.

Healthcare is always a sunrise industry, observed Dr G. Bakthavathsalam, Chairman, KG Hospitals, Coimbatore, in his address and said that there was a great scope for government and private to jointly promote and operate healthcare institutions. Only passion could ensure and sustain a Public-Private Partnership model, he mentioned.
