‘Cut in fuel prices not enough’

Madurai, Dec. 7

The Tamilnadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry has urged the Union Petroleum Minister to announce further price reduction in petrol and diesel. Terming the recent announcement of a reduction in the prices of petrol and diesel by the Union Government as ‘slender’ in the context of a steep fall in international crude prices, Mr S. Jeyabalan, chamber President, in a statement here said that the reduction is too meagre to provide any appreciable relief to trade and industry reeling under unprecedented global economic and fiscal recession and the general public, distressed by rising commodity prices. With one third fall in international crude prices, it was widely believed that the reduction would be in the order of Rs 10 for petrol and Rs 5 for diesel a litre, he said. —
