Ashok Chavan Ministry takes oath in Mumbai

Our Bureau

Mumbai, Dec. 8 Mr Ashok Chavan, newly appointed Chief Minister of Maharashtra took the oath of office and secrecy at the Governor House on Monday. The NCP leader Mr Chagan Bhujbal was sworn in as the Deputy Chief Minister.

The Governor of Maharashtra, Mr S.C. Jamir, also administrated the oath of office to 37 other ministers. The new Ministry has retained 31 ministers from Vilasrao Deshmukh’s government and has added eight new ministers. Three ministers of state have been elevated to the Cabinet position. Portfolio distribution will be carried out in a few days.

Mr Chavan was holding Industries Ministry in the Vilasrao Deshmukh government. Known for his clean image and being loyalist to the Congress party, Mr Chavan started his political career in 1987-88, when he was elected as MP from Nanded parliamentary constituency.

For Mr Bhujbal it is a comeback to the same ministry after a gap of five years. In the wake of fake stamp paper scam, he had to resign from his position in December 2003.

The most surprising comeback has been of Mr Nawab Malik, MLA from Kurla in Mumbai and Mr Swaroop Singh Naik, from Nandurbar. Both the MLAs had resigned from Deshmukh government over corruption charges.
