21,000 Mumbai restaurants plan to ban meal vouchers

Our Bureau

Mumbai, Dec. 8 Indian Hotel and Restaurants Association (AHAR) has threatened to ban meal vouchers from its over 21,000 snack and food outlets in Mumbai. A statement from the association on Monday said: Such move could be adopted in the light of complaints that up to 7 per cent commission being charged by meal voucher companies: SODEXO and Ticket Restaurant. The issue will be taken up by AHAR’s members at its annual general meeting (AGM) scheduled for December 10.

The association said, “Overburdened restaurateurs of Mumbai are of the view that commission similar to that charged on credit cards must be levied by SODEXO and ACCOR service on their meal vouchers. While AHAR has claimed success for getting concessions by BMC in Trade Refuse Charges and Excise License fees by the State Excise Department in the recent past its intensive efforts to make the meal voucher providers to see reason has failed.”

More than 6,000 members are scheduled to attend the AGM of AHAR, it said.

According to Mr Chandrahas Shetty, President, AHAR, “ACCOR SERVICES (Ticket Restaurant) and SODEXO (Meal Pass) collect an average of Rs 20 crore a month (commission up to 7 per cent) from AHAR members for no service at all. While our agreement with them provides for reimbursement of these meal vouchers in 15 days, the cheque reaches us only after 30-45 days and a rigorous follow-up. The funny part is we have to courier these meal vouchers for redemption, both SODEXO and ACCOR service do not collect nor accept personal delivery against acknowledgement.”
