New Delhi, Dec. 8 Car makers have been quick in responding to the Government’s announcement of a four per centage point reduction in excise duty.

Many of the car companies such as Maruti, Hyundai, and Toyota announced a reduction in the prices of their models in the range of Rs 8,000 up to Rs 1 lakh.

The country’s largest car maker, Maruti Suzuki, has lowered the prices of M-800 and Omni in the range of Rs 6,593 to Rs 8,032 on the LPG variant of Omni. In the case of Alto variants, the prices have fallen by Rs 9,167 for the base model and up to Rs 8,028 on the top end model. Similarly, its other models such as Zen Estilo, Wagon R, Swift hatchback and Dzire, the prices have now been reduced between Rs 11,167 andRs 21,784 for the top end variant of its entry level sedan, Dzire.

The sharpest cut in prices comes on its sedan SX4 which would now cost Rs 7.37 lakh compared with Rs 7.6 lakh earlier, a reduction of almost Rs 23,187. In a statement, the company said that the revised prices would be with effect from December 7.

Hyundai Motors India Ltd, which has already offered high discounts on all its models, said that it would continue to offer the existing scheme till December 15, after which the new prices would be applicable. The company said that according to the new excise duty structure, prices of its flagship model Santro would drop by Rs 8,834 and the highest cut would be on its luxury car Sonata, which would become cheaper by Rs 44,792.

Hyundai’s best selling premium hatchback i10 would now cost Rs 11,247 less at Rs 3.25 lakh as against its current price at Rs 3.37 lakh. Both Maruti and Hyundai clarified that there would be no impact on models such as Grand Vitara and Tucson as they are imported.

Japanese car maker Toyota also promptly followed suit. Despite the company’s earlier statement of increasing prices next year due to currency fluctuation, the company has announced a cut in its prices ranging from Rs 23,000 to Rs 1.21 lakh across models. The company’s premium SUV Innova would be available at a range of Rs 23,980 to Rs 32, 780 (ex-showroom Delhi) less. Its newly launched premium sedan Altis would cost Rs 40,750 less for the top-end variant. Camry and Prado too would be cheaper by Rs 76,130 and Rs 1.21 lakh respectively.

Hindustan Motors also said that its sedan Lancer would now cost Rs 7.74 lakh from its earlier price of Rs 7.99 lakh, SUV Outlander would be at Rs 20.35 lakh from Rs 21 lakh and Montero at Rs 38 lakh from Rs 39.50 lakh.
