Thumbs-up for the voter

As far as election results are concerned, victory or a defeat is a composition of several factors, but we tend to make it look simplistic. While in Rajasthan, the Congress could not cross the half-way mark, in MP, the party had too many leaders, each with his own agenda; so, there was obvious disunity. Within the BJP, people were fighting amongst themselves. In Delhi, Sheila Dikshit’s hard work, commitment and sincerity were behind her success. Similarly, in Mizoram, Lalthanwala had a free hand, but the defeat of the sitting chief ministers in both the constituencies he contested from indicates the anger of the electorate against him and his party.

One only hopes the leaders have learnt their lessons. The BJP should not believe that it can fool the electorate on the terror plank and the Congress that voters would back it irrespective of its performance.

The article “Thumbs-up for the discerning voter” (Business Line, December 9) is a timely analysis of the results of the recently-held polls in some States. But the author’s view that politicians play the communal card does not appear correct.

The BJP that is labelled communalist, has done reasonably well. In the context of the mammoth destruction of life and property in the recent terrorist attacks, any party will blame the government for the abject failure in ensuring fool-proof security despite the number of bomb blasts in recent times. That should not be construed as using communal card.
