Average tea prices up Rs 18 a kg at auctions


The average export price of tea up by Rs 6.95 a kg to Rs 109.65.

Between January and October this year, the average auction price of tea on all-India basis was up by nearly Rs 18 a kg at Rs 84.36 (Rs 66.38 a kg in the same period last year) but the quantity of tea sold through auctions during the period dropped by an estimated two million kg at 398.7 mkg (400.7 mkg), according to a statistical data released by the Indian Tea Association.

North Indian centres

The drop in volume was particularly evident in the North Indian tea auction centres where a total of 268.6 mkg were offered during the period under review as compared to 290.4 mkg, or a drop of about 22 mkg. However, the average price was up by Rs 20.77 a kg at Rs 93.43 a kg ( Rs 72.66 a kg).

South India

During the same period, the tea auction centres in South India attracted much larger volume but lower average increase in price for a kg. Thus the volume was up by 22 mkg at 130.1 mkg (110.3 mkg) while the average price at Rs 65.63 a kg (Rs 49.84 a kg) was up by Rs 15.79 a kg.

Export price

During the period under review, the average export price of tea was up by Rs 6.95 a kg at Rs 109.65 a kg (Rs 102.7 a kg in the same period last year). During the same period, the volume of export was up by 14.6 mkg at 156.5 mkg (141.9 mkg).

The average export price of North Indian tea was up by Rs 4.7 a kg at Rs 127.92 (Rs 123.19) and that of South Indian tea by Rs 11.3 a kg at Rs 89.49 (Rs 78.18).

In terms of volume, the export of North Indian tea was up by 4.8 mkg at 82.1 mkg (77.3 mkg) while of South India variety by 9.8 mkg at 74.4 mkg (64.6 mkg).

In other words, the export earning at Rs 1,716 crore (Rs 1,457 crore) was up by about Rs 259 crore., of which the share of North Indian tea was Rs 98 crore and of South Indian tea Rs 161 crore.

Between January and September this year, as ITA statistics reveal, India imported 14.67 mkg of tea at an average price of Rs 75.61 a kg as compared to 11.06 mkg at an average price of Rs 67.94 a kg in the same period last year.
