Outsourcing S. Africa, a rival in BPO space Our Bureau Bangalore, Dec. 10 Beleaguered Indian IT and BPO outsourcers may now have to contend with vendors in South Africa as the country has emerged as a credible alternative outsourcing destination. A study by Everest Group revealed that cost savings between South Africa and other low-cost destinations such as India have almost halved in the past four years, posing challenges to Indian vendors. “South Africa presents a significant opportunity for global financial services firms looking to expand their offshore footprint,” said Mr Nikhil Rajpal, Principal, Everest Group. Further, it was observed that savings gap between Johannesburg and Bangalore has decreased from 30 per cent in 2005 to 15 per cent in 2008 and could further decrease to eight per cent in 2012. Currency volatility is a major reason for the narrowing savings gap. While most other currencies have appreciated on average over the past three years, the South African currency has depreciated. “BPO is one of the priority sectors for growth in South Africa,” said Mr Brian Whittaker, CEO of South Africa-based Business Trust.
