Lottery sales set to reach Rs 500 crore

Thiruvananthapuram, Dec. 11

The sale of Kerala Government lottery tickets is set to reach Rs 500 crore in the current year, according to the Finance Minister, Dr Thomas Isaac.

The target is to take the sales to Rs 1,000 crore next year and to achieve it, the Government has decided to set up a new security press exclusively to print lottery tickets, the Minister said while inaugurating the headquarters of the welfare fund for State lottery agents and sales people.

He said the Centre would be approached to vest the power to control the sale of unauthorised lottery tickets with the State Government. The Opposition has also extended support to the move.

Norms violation

The Minister noted that lotteries in the other States had been violating all norms. As per the law, the Government should be directly in charge of the lotteries and the proceeds should be used for public welfare. However, the lotteries from the other States do not comply with this and hence could be termed as ‘unauthorised’.

The Kerala Government had been conducting the lotteries as per laws, he added.
