‘Convene meet on pending land acquisition cases’

Our Legal Correspondent

Chennai, Dec. 11 Following filing of large number of cases by the Tamil Nadu Housing Board pertaining to land acquisition, and these proceedings were circumscribed by procedural aspects of the Land Acquisition Act, the Madras High Court has directed the Chief Secretary to convene a meeting of top officials concerned before December 18, 2008 to discuss the issue threadbare and submit a report to the Court.

The extent of land involved in these cases amounted to about 1,997 acres.

Mr Justice K. Chandru, who heard the petitions recently, called for swift action to alleviate the hardship faced by the civil society, and directed the Chief Secretary to invite Secretary, Housing & Urban Development, Secretary, Revenue Dept, Chairman, Housing Board and Dist Collector, Coimbatore, to the meeting and discuss the whole issue of land acquisition, particularly in Kalapatti Village, Coimbatore (N) Taluk.

If a decision was taken by the State based upon the field situation, thereafter, the pending issues could be resolved by this Court, the Judge said in his recent order.
