Greater Noida (UP), Dec. 19 Mentoring is relevant in today’s times more than ever before and corporates should hand-hold young managers so that they can don the corporate mantle effectively.

“Mentoring is a skill where you develop a subordinate to perform a skill. Dictionary defines mentoring as a process of building mutually beneficial partnership to help develop skills, behaviour and insights to reach the partner’s goals which a mentor has no stake in the outcome of. Mentoring is a relationship where the two people involved are always together at power in the learning process,” Ms Satbir Silas, Chief Electoral Officer and Secretary (Elections), Delhi Government, said.

Addressing students of the Greater Noida Institute of Management here on Friday, as part of the Business Line Club lecture series, Ms Silas said, “corporates should help develop a debutant rather than enforce decisions on them, as effective mentoring can have far-reaching benefits on corporate work culture”.

“If leadership is about thinking then mentorship is about feeling. A good mentor needs to have good listening abilities, domain knowledge and empathy as key characteristics. A mentor is a midway position between a boss and a teacher,” she said adding even the Government is conducting training modules to include mentoring as a key HR tool.

Ms Silas also observed that the debutant should also never be scared of soiling their hands at work and should apprise themselves with the company’s rules and regulations.

“A mentor derives immense satisfaction in assisting someone. It is a two-way process and can be a highly rewarding experience for both the individual – the mentor and the mentee,” she added.

The event was sponsored by the Indian Overseas Bank.
