Yechury panel moots private sector practices for AI

New Delhi, Dec. 19 A parliamentary committee, headed by the CPI(M) Member of Parliament, Mr Sitaram Yechury, has recommended the adoption of private sector practices for the general improvement of the state-owned airline Air India.

The suggestion has been made by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism and Culture, which recommended that the Government may commission a study “to know how the private sector airlines are functioning including the financial freedom they are enjoying, their efficiency and customer service”.

The report of the 30-member committee adds that the finding may be used for improvement of National Aviation Company of India Ltd (NACIL), the entity created by the merger of Air India and Indian. The airline created by the merger is also called Air India.

What the Committee means by the “financial freedom” enjoyed by the private airlines has, however, not been elaborated upon in the report. In the case of the 68 Boeing aircraft that Air India is acquiring, the proposal was first approved by the board. The airline, however, had to wait for the acquisition proposal to be cleared not only by two Inter-Ministerial bureaucratic level committees, but also by an empowered Group of Ministers headed by the then Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, before it could finally ink the deal.
