Parliamentary panel asks refineries to add more capacities

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Dec. 20 The Standing Committee on Petroleum and Natural Gas has asked the public sector oil refiners to add more capacities to their existing refineries that would boost exports and improve bottomlines.

In its report on oil refineries, presented to Parliament by the committed headed by Mr N. Janardhana Reddy, it noted that while the public sector refineries have decided to go in for lower capacity addition in percentage terms, the private sector players have taken a gigantic stride in this direction.

“The committee is at a loss to understand the lower capacity addition by the public sector refineries,” the report said.

Export quantum

“Such additional capacities would give more and more opportunity to companies to increase their export quantum and improve their bottomlines, the committee would like the public sector oil companies to go in for further expansions in their existing refineries and also set up new ones at strategic locations, having export advantages,” the report said.

The present refining capacity of public sector companies is 105.47 million tonne per annum (mtpa) and that of private sector is 43.50 mtpa. The planned capacity addition according to the Eleventh Five-Year Plan is 53.49 mtpa in the public sector and 38.50 mtpa in the private sector.
