Retailing The Bombay Store to open more outlets Our Bureau Bangalore, Dec. 21 Mumbai-based The Bombay Store which has eight outlets now wants to step up its presence in the country with six more stores by October next year. Mr Asim Dalal, Managing Director, The Bombay Store, told Business Line that along with this increased presence, the lifestyle-based retail chain is also repositioning itself as a ‘modern Indian store for young Indians’. “The perception that The Bombay Store is meant for tourists and foreigners has to be changed as our main target customer is the local shopper,” said Mr Dalal. The Bombay Store, which was started by Lokmanya Tilak in 1906 as part of the Swadeshi Movement, carried the desi homespun tag till 1991 when the Mumbai-based Dalal family took over the company. In its modern avatar, The Bombay Store offers eco-friendly, organic products sourced from across the country. With two large format stores and six smaller stores (3,000-4,000 sq ft) across four cities, The Bombay Store is looking at future expansion through a mix of airport, high street and mall retailing but only in the smaller formats, according to Mr Dalal. The retail chain which recorded a turnover of Rs 25 crore in March 2008, expects only a marginal increase by end of fiscal 2009 to Rs 27 crore, but expects to double the figure to Rs 50 crore by March 2010, said Mr Dalal.
