Agri-Biz & Commodities - Tea
North Indian teas see good demand

Our Bureau

Kolkata, Dec. 21 During the last week, selected liquoring teas maintaining quality met with good demand and sold irregularly around last, while medium and plainer categories as well as teas showing a decline in quality were lower, according to tea auctioneers. The major blenders were active with some support from other packeteers. There was a good enquiry from western Indian dealers for liquoring sorts, while other internal sections operated.

Improved Darjeeling whole leaf and brokens sold around last, while the remainder tended easier. Fannings followed an easier trend and met with some withdrawals. The packeteers operated actively along with some local interest.

Orthodox sale met with only fair demand with few selected well made teas barely steady, while the remainder tended lower with quality, particularly stalky varieties. There were some enquiries from West Asian shippers, while CIS shippers were selective. Fair support was from North India on bolder whole leaf. Hindustan Unilever Ltd operated on the smaller brokens and fannings.

INTERNATIONAL

The Mombasa market saw strong demand with all categories tending dearer. Pakistan and Egyptian packers, Afghanistan and the Bazaar lent very strong support with active interest from Yemen, other West Asian countries and Kazakhstan. There were more enquiries from the UK, Somalia and Sudan. Russian and Egyptian Government sectors were quiet.

The Colombo auction saw better demand with teas selling at firm to dearer levels. The better teas witnessed improved demand from shippers to Japan with CIS biding on a wider cross section of the teas on offer.

Shippers to the UK and the Continent appeared to be less active.

Turkey, Dubai, and Iran operated on a fair cross section of the teas, whilst the other out markets were also active but to a lesser extent.
