Nilgiri tea production increases 6% in Nov

P.S. Sundar

Coonoor, Dec. 23 Tea production in its member estates in the Nilgiris in November was six per cent more than in November 2007, according to UPASI Tea Research Foundation.

Production was more in Kundah and Udhagamandalam agro-climatic zones. It was less in Coonoor, Kotagiri and Kullakamby zones.

“Output in our member estates rose to 1.13 million kg (mkg) from 1.07 mkg in November 2007. The five-year mean was also 1.07 mkg. Cumulative production in the 11 months increased to 14.3 mkg from 12.59 mkg in 2007 and the five-year mean of 13.13 mkg”, Dr B. Radhakrishnan, Senior Advisory Officer, said.

Poor rainfall

Production would have been still higher had it not been for the poor rainfall in the month. “The rainfall received in November was very less compared to 10-year decennial average for the month,” Dr Radhakrishnan said.

Kotagiri received the highest rainfall of 10.1 cms against 14.1 cms in November 2007 and the decennial average of 32. 3 cms, followed by Coonoor 9.6 (9.5 and 30), Kullakamby 7.3 (8.4 and 26.4) and Kundah 6 cms (4.6 and 19.7).
